The figure of the Witch has haunted the margins of religion and spirituality for thousands of years, as a figure of transgressive spiritual power, outlaw magic, and alluring sexuality. Equally pervasive is her presence in art, from ancient depictions in the near east, through the European Middle Ages, down to her present representations in occult subculture. WITCH-IKON gathers a selection of images of witches and their diabolical magic, emphasizing the range of artistic depictions that have helped coalesce this most powerful of modern supernatural icons. Numerous full color images are accompanied by several scholarly essays concerning the iconography of witchcraft and the images used to represent witches through time. Author Information
DANIEL A. SCHULKE is the author of a number of books on occult philosophy, witchcraft, and esoteric herbalism, including Veneficium: Magic Witchcraft and the Poison Path (Three Hands Press, 2012). He is the co-editor of the journal Clavis: Occult Arts, Letters and Experience. Tom Allen is an artist based in Los Angeles. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and a Master of Fine Arts from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California. He has had solo exhibitions at Richard Telles Fine Art, Los Angeles, and Galerie Michael Janssen, Cologne and Berlin. He has been included in group exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York and Stockholm, Sweden, among others. His work is held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, as well as in numerous private collections. He is an adjunct faculty member in the Graduate Studies In Art program at Art Center College of Design. Martin Duffy lives in Sussex, England and writes on the subjects of folk magic, mythology and the occult arts; in particular the manner in which they relate to traditional witch-lore and practices. His articles have appeared have appeared in the pages of THE CAULDRON, CLAVIS JOURNAL and WYRD. He also contributed an essay to an anthology published by Llewellyn Worldwide, concerning the manner in which occult philosophy informs and permeates the working of practical folk-magic. Mr. Duffy's first book for Three Hands Press is THE DEVIL'S RAIMENTS, treating the subject of traditional ritual vestments and attire, and their symbolism, which was followed by his book on image magic, EFFIGY.
