Wings of Ecstasy: Domenico Bernini's Vita of St. Joseph of Copertino (1722)

Overview

First English translation of the life of St. Joseph of Copertino, mystic famous for his ecstasies, levitations, bilocations, mind-reading, miraculous healings, and other extraordinary phenomena. The Vita is followed by a Commentary that details the evidence for these claims, and discusses their implications for human potential and human evolution; offering new perspectives on our understanding of the nature of mind and spiritual life. This book is unabashedly conscious of itself as a challenge to reductive scientific materialism.

Michael Grosso studied classics and received his Ph.D in philosophy from Columbia University. He has taught philosophy and the humanities at City University of New York, Kennedy University, and New Jersey City University, and is now an independent scholar, author, and painter. With a focus on creativity, social criticism and consciousness research, he has written and co-written books on mythology, life after death, and the parapsychology of religion. Books include The Millennium Myth; Soulmaking: Uncommon Paths to Self-Understanding; Frontiers of the Soul; Experiencing the Next World Now; The Man Who Could Fly: St. Joseph of Copertino and the Mystery of Levitation; and, most recent, The Final Choice: Death or Transcendence? (2017) Co-written books include Irreducible Mind (ed. E. Kelly) and Beyond Physicalism (eds. Kelly, Crabtree, & Marshall). All these books are part of a current trend among various writers to formulate a new worldview that harmonizes the ideals of science and spirituality.
