Overview

Windows 2000 is at heart an IP and DNS-based network operating system. Domain Name Service (DNS) is an important part of the Internet and any intranet. It replaces numeric node addresses with names that are easy to understand like w.w.w.mywebsite.com. Windows 2000 DNS Server changes this static scenario with a dynamic environment where changes, such as the addition of a new PC and hence a new DNS name database entry, are accomplished almost immediately and done automatically. Network administrators need to understand how this process works and how to manage it to gain the benefits of these new features. Windows 2000 Active Directory is key to the change and DNS Server is tightly coupled with Active Directory. This book is targeted at network administrators who will be deploying and maintaining Windows 2000 with its DNS support. It will address installation and architecture issues as well as regular maintenance. This information is very useful prior to migration from Windows NT because Active Dictionary and DNS Server configuration can affect both performance and ease of management.
