Overview

William Shakespeare’s Sonnet Philosophy Volume 1 (Second Edition 2019) presents evidence and argument to show Shakespeare deliberately structures and numbers his philosophy into the 154 sonnets he publishes as Shakespeare's Sonnets in 1609 as the philosophy behind all his plays in the 1623 Folio. By examining the logical and numerological relation of the 154 sonnets as nature to the division into sequences of 28 Mistress sonnets and 126 Master Mistress sonnets, Volume 1 demonstrates that the Sonnets articulate the logical conditions for any mythic expression, including Shakespeare's plays. Viewing the whole set and individual sonnets – and the plays - from their inherent philosophy exposes traditional prejudices toward the set.

Reviews

... there followed a major treatise which analyses the sonnets in extra- ordinary depth. The scholarly input is in the proper sense of the word - awesome. I thought that in the course of my university studies and many years of teaching I had some understanding of Shakespeare's writings. Alongside the Peters' insights this understanding is trite, superficial and inadequate. The work that Mr. Peters has produced is not merely a work of discovery: it is a masterpiece of analysis which breaks new ground and compels by its logic a new view of the sonnets. R. G. Habershon M.A. B.Ed. A.C.C.M. Dip. Teach. I am sure that the systematic exposition of his views which he is working out in a most committed and honest manner will prove to be an original contribution to our under- standing of these matters and consequently of wide interest. This interest will include those involved in the exposition of the thought of Shakespeare but also philosophers and historians of ideas concerned with philosophy of life issues and with broad issues in the philosophy of art and aesthetics. Emeritus Professor Les Holborow I still find his sense of overall coherence of the sonnets challenging and fascinating. I am more excited by it than by most standard academic commentaries on the sonnets. Professor Richard P. Corballis

Author Information

Roger Peters is an artist, philosopher and writer who lives and works in Taranaki, New Zealand. In 1995, he detected a profound and comprehensive philosophy in Shakespeare’s 1609 Sonnets. The depth and scope of the insight explains why Shakespeare’s plays and poems are increasingly relevant to today’s global audience. Peters presented Shakespeare’s nature-based philosophy in a 1760-page four-volume set William Shakespeare’s Sonnet Philosophy in 2005. Volume 1(Second Edition 2019) from the four-volume slip-case set examines the logical structure and poetic expression of the 154 sonnets from the 1609 Edition to show that the Sonnet philosophy is the basis for their meaning. It further reveals the prejudices upon which the traditional commentaries on the 1609 edition are based. Peters established the Quaternary Institute in 2001 as a pedagogic space for exploring and disseminating the insights arising from Shakespeare’s unprecedented achievement.
