William Blake

Overview

vi PREFACE reproductions from Captain Archibald Stirlings superb coloured copy of the Jemsalem, to Captain Stirling also my warm thanks are due. Mr. W. Graham Robertson has permitted me to publish reproductions of seven of the drawings in his unique collection, and I could gladly have leaned more upon his liberality than I have, but that other claimants had forestalled me. Mr, George Macmillan and Sir Charles Dilke have also kindly allowed me to reproduce works in their possession and I have to thank the authorities at the Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge for a similar per mission. I am also indebted to Professor Tylor, and to Messrs. W. Bateson, A. M. S. Methuen, and Bowes Morrell, for lending to me or otherwise allowing me to inspect the books and pictures in their possession. The authorities at the South Kensington and at the British Museum have met my demands with their usual long suffering kindness and I must not forget the advantage I received from the presence of a Blake specialist in the Print Room. The inception of the work was due to the enthusiasm of a friend, who will, I fear, view only with regret my qualified devotion to my subject. KlNGHAM, 1909. CONTENTS OHAP. PAOB I.
