Overview

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus, we are publishing a key document of modern design history: the 1939 WeiA wasser VLG (Vereinigte Lausitzer Glaswerke) products catalogue featuring glass with the diamond trademark. For the first time all designs submitted to VLG by the Bauhaus artist Wilhelm Wagenfeld and other artists have been photographed and rendered 'experienceable' at a glance in the context of their - and our - time. After his time at the Jenaer Glaswerke, Wilhelm Wagenfeld's collaboration with VLG represented the most extensive realisation of the Bauhaus idea of 'artist and industry' working together, a precedent unequalled in the history of design. Even though a hostile regime and war at first hindered and then put a premature end to this collaboration, it would remain the precedent for realising the idea developed at the Bauhaus. Hence the 'artistic collaboration' between Wagenfeld and VLG not only focused on promoting specific individual designs but, even more importantly, on furthering the positive development of the entire business. Apart from enhancing the corporate image, branding, assortment and personnel policies came into play. Against such significant background information, the present book features the individual Wagenfeld designs in the artistic product photographs of the day, which in themselves represent an invitation to linger over them and enjoy 'simply browsing'. Beate Manske M.A., managing director of the Wilhelm Wagenfeld-Stiftung in Bremen, and Dr. Carlo Burschel, historian of design, have placed their expertise at the service of editing the publication and writing the accompanying texts.
