Payne is a Certified Wildlife Biologist and Professor Emeritus of Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He worked as a wildlife biologist for the Newfoundland and Labrador Wildlife Service (1967-71) and as a wildlife professor for the University of Washington in Seattle (1973-75) and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (1975-98).
