Overview

"'Wild Machinations of the Desperate Mind' is a collection of short stories that explore outlandish characters often in desperate situations pursuing wild schemes. Demoralised soldiers forced to fight a futile, unwinnable war (Alfred's Story); an infatuated husband, suffering a sickly kind of love, forced to reconcile his dear wife's terminal illness (Connoisseur's Diary); a lowly peasant driven to reckless danger by his heart's wild desire, to try and win the hand of his dearly beloved princess (Dante's Tooth); simply a ""psycho in love"", for want of a better description (Fatal Obsession); a young professional with an attitude and something to prove (First Impression); a devoted wife unwittingly stumbles upon her husband's darkest secrets (Hide Your Secrets); a young patient helplessly in love with his doctor (Ladybug); a young woman with a powerful ability coveted by governments worldwide (Secret Words); university students dealing with the failure of unfulfilled career ambitions (The Declined): this uneasy, perhaps somewhat disturbing, collection of short stories portrays the human condition at its most vulnerable and desperate - yearning for people and things that are simply not yours, or yours no longer.... Oddly enough, the inspiration for this collection is mostly my own life experiences - or, perhaps, lack thereof. I have always lived in a mundane world, sluggishly following a boring routine of the ordinary: four-walled city apartment; pushing emails in an unfulfilling office job; intentionally offending my work colleagues because deep-down I relish the excitement of conflict and feeling threatened; shouting at the useless politician on TV, as if I know any better; rewatching old YouTube videos I have seen many times. At the same time, I have always yearned to achieve the extraordinary: wreck diving down to thirty metres while severely hydrophobic; travelling overseas to feel inspired, only to feel wanting.... And, yet, the more I tried to pursue the extraordinary, the more I felt ordinary: panicking over a flooded mask deep under the Pacific Ocean like a true amateur; magnificent super cities that, surprisingly, do not satiate your wanderlust but, rather, only remind you of your loneliness.... Alas, perhaps my only true form of escape from the mundane and ordinary has always been to put pen to paper. So, when I write, my characters are naturally outlandish - because I yearn to be outlandish; my characters usually find themselves in desperate situations - because I yearn to feel the significance of an important circumstance; the plot is usually wild - because I yearn to be wild, to go out with a bang and leave a big, scathing mark. My characters do what I cannot, what I could only ever dream of, imagine.... This book is, perhaps, my foolhardy attempt to resist the mundane and ordinary. I hope you enjoy reading these whacky stories as much as I enjoyed writing them. Why settle for the mundane and ordinary...? Do something extraordinary while you still can...."
