OverviewScores of animals live in Maine's outdoors. Some are common enough that any Mainer could identify them: loons, moose, black bears, great blue herons. Others are lesser-known, such as sora birds, green frogs, cormorants, and more. Maine Guide Tom Seymour treks year-round through the woods and fields of Maine. He gets to see all these creatures, some more often than others and has learned much about them. Now he's sharing that knowledge in his new book Wild Critters of Maine. With the same lively, accessible storytelling as his previous books, including Wild Plants of Maine, Tom Seymour introduces and describes the characteristics of many of Maine's treasured animals. From the white-tailed deer plowing through the snow to forage on saplings to the red-winged blackbird indicating when the brown trout are coming to the surface--each of the critters is given plenty of space to show their best colors. While he is clearly an enthusiastic wielder of the gun, his writing about the various fish he has pursued glows with particular devotion. Numerous recollections of his excursions into the woods with his grandpa explain where his love for the outdoors came from; his essay about crayfish, Not just for kids, makes it obvious that he is still that youngster at heart. He eats what he kills, and he strongly disapproves of such cruelty as hooking a live crayfish for bait. by THOMAS URQUHART Author InformationHe lives in a small cabin in Waldo, Maine.
