Overview

There is no deity but Allah, reads the Islamic declaration of witness or shahada. Muslims hold that he created the world in six days and sent prophets including Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus, and finally Muhammad, who urged people to worship only him and shun idolatry and polytheism. Islam, which literally translates as submission, was not always the name of the faith that Muhammad created. Instead, it was referring to the original religion of all humankind, including the world itself, which, like us, was made to serve Allah. All earlier prophets and their followers were Muslims (submitters to Allah), despite the fact that Muslims sometimes confuse the definitions of the terms Islam and Muslim. Several prophets were given texts by Allah, including the Torah of Moses, the Psalms of David, and the Gospel of Jesus. Yet, their writings and messages were lost or tainted.
