From the INTRODUCTION. This book is the result of many years' experience in the teaching of whist. During this time the author has used, with such success, the plan of the game and the conventions herein set forth, that he now is led to offer them to the general whist-studying public. This is not a manual for advanced players. It contains no abstruse mathematical calculations; it deals in no theories; it propounds no brilliant coups. It aims simply to be a practical exposition of the game, explained and so arranged as to be not only methodical but easy to grasp and to remember. It presents a system which, when once thoroughly studied and fixed, equips the student with an intelligible alphabet wherewith to express the results of his deductions and inferences.
