Overview

Aged fifty-five I was out of job. So what should I do? There did not seem to be many jobs for disenchanted neuroscientists. I had tried to learn Mandarin, telling everyone that I intended to escape to China, as time progressed this became embarrassing, I was still in Australia, a bit like the boy who cried wolf, no one believed me anymore. So it was off to China to start my new life as a Scientific Editor and Research Consultant. Arriving in Chongqing late at night, I gazed at the dark forest of apartment building shrouded in mist, an eerie gloom pervading the scene, and not for the first time, wondered 'have I made the right choice?'. I knew little to nothing about Chongqing, I even had to resort to Google to locate the city on a map, plus I had an almost complete lack of Mandarin. Friends often started emails with 'where the hell are you', so what follows is mixture or some might say a mishmash of a diary, travelogue, memoir, and various musing along the way where the 'extraordinary' may become the 'ordinary' as time goes by. It is almost impossible to spend so much time in a country such as China without traveling to all those places that have been so indelibly embedded in one's imagination. Indeed, such places are changing rapidly and I was fortunate enough to witness some of these changes firsthand. I detail my progress as I was included more and more into the fabric of life in China, the friends who took the time to show me their China and explain all manner of strange things along the way during my many adventures and incidents where 'it's complicated' became one of my stock phrases.
