Reviews

Lonely. Frightened. Hopeless. Devastated. Such feelings are common to those who suffer the death of a loved one or the death of a dream. How can we best help counseling clients, friends, and people we love who are walking the lonely path of grief? Thanks to Chaplain Burghardt, we have this new comforting resource to recommend. Each devotion stands alone as a bite-sized portion of reassurance. Hurting people need a voice like hers; one that portrays a calm, non-anxious acceptance and peaceful encouragement that God is walking this hard path beside them.-Charlene J. Giles, M.A., L.M.F.T., Former Director of Care and Marriage Ministries at Asbury United Methodist Church, Tulsa, Oklahoma Writing a book about grief and suffering that can be helpful to a broad group of sufferers is not easy. Ms. Burghardt, however, has done just that. She writes from the perspective of someone who not only has personally experienced loss in many ways but also as a chaplain who has been given the privilege of listening to the hearts of others. As a result, this book deals with a wide range of stories, and yet, those going through grief can learn from each one. Ms. Burghardt has captured so well that there is a universality about the grief we share. I highly recommend this book as a practical guide to understanding and dealing with grief.-David DeKlavon, Ph.D., Associate Professor of New Testament Interpretation, Boyce College (retired) For anyone who is hurting, anyone who feels lonely, anyone who is grieving, this devotional brings not only a warmth of love and kindness, but, more importantly, it brings the promise of healing of the soul from the Holy Spirit. Through her well-crafted words and stories, Rev. Burghardt shares the depth of comfort from her own personal life stories as well as from the Scriptures. Where your heart is hurting, this will help take you through the pain to the joy that awaits you. -Rev. Damon E. Relder, Senior Associate Pastor, Coker Methodist Church, San Antonio, Texas Jesus said that we will have suffering in this world (John 16:33), but He promises to be with us. With the passion of an evangelist and the heart of a chaplain, Charleen Burghardt leads us through the scriptures to see the presence of God in our suffering and grief. Her openness and transparency in sharing her own journey are both beautiful and inspiring, and this book will be an invaluable resource for anyone who finds themselves in the company of heartache and loss.-Rev. Dr. Adam Knight, Senior Pastor, Coker Methodist Church, San Antonio, Texas Charleen Burghardt has written a very tender and compassionate book that relates to grieving and loss in a most personal way. She knows the heaviness of loss and the heartaches that accompany loss and has found strength and comfort in her faith in God and in the truths of His Word, the Bible. This book is a gift to those who are walking in the valley of the shadow of death. Readers will benefit and be blessed by this book as they try to find hope and comfort in their losses.-Beverly Moore, Certified Biblical Counselor with the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors; BA, Theology; Master's in Biblical Counseling; Coauthor of In the Aftermath, Past the Pain of Childhood Sexual Abuse Charleen Burghardt's devotional is a lifeline for people, like me, who have experienced loss and grief. Throughout each devotional, Charleen is a compassionate, hope-filled guide. Her journal prompts are powerful tools for processing what is underneath the surface, getting to a place where we can allow Jesus to soothe our souls and heal our hearts. This book is more than words-it's a sacred space of restoration for the grieving.-Bekah Bowman, Author of Can't Steal My Joy (www.bekahbowman.com)
