When Your Parent Needs You: A Guide to Positive Growth When Caring for Aging Parents

Overview

When Your Parent Needs You acknowledges that caring for an aging parent is an all-encompassing experience that affects every aspect of life. It brings changes and challenges that are difficult emotionally and physically. Through interviews with caregivers and experts on aging, this video addresses issues such as becoming your parent's caregiver, balancing work and personal life with the never-ending tasks of caregiving, coping with negative emotions and anxieties, and caring with compassion. When Your Parent Needs You emphasizes that caring for an aging parent can be more than an experience that is merely survived. It is an opportunity for personal growth, and most importantly, a window of time to give back to your parents and share their final years with them. The video features two specialists in caregiving and aging issues: Beth Witrogen McLeod and Avrene L. Brandt, Ph.D. Beth Witrogen McLeod is a journalist, speaker, consultant and author of Caregiving: The Spiritual Journey of Love, Loss and Renewal, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. She has appeared on NBC's Today Show, and her articles on elder care have appeared in Good Housekeeping, Health, Family Circle, and The Wall Street Journal. Dr. Brandt, a practicing licensed clinical psychologist, is a consultant to the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. She is the author of Caregiver's Reprieve.

Reviews

e> July/August 2007

Journalist Beth Witrogen McLeod's comforting and insightful narration complements interviews and footage of adult children and parents interacting with one another. Suggested for public library health-care collections. Jeff Dick Booklist It addresses the emotional issues that surface when caring for an aging parent, whether in a home or institutional setting. Coming to terms with anger, coping with depression, and shifting familial roles are discussed with great insight and compassion. ...this subject, has few videos and virtually none of this caliber. Highly recommended. Susan B. Hagloch Library Journal e> July/August 2007 Caring for aging parents can be one of life's greatest challenges. This video from Paraclete (by the producer of A Place Prepared) acknowledges the negatives, including stress and anger, and offers practical help from professionals. But its beauty is its focus on the positive aspects of care giving - the ways in which relationships and spirits grow and the ways in which forgiveness and love happen when we tend to the needs of our failing elders. Beth Witrogen McLeod, a Pulitzer-nominated author who served as caregiver for her parents, and Dr. Avrene Brandt, a clinical psychologist, contribute wise observation and counsel. Adult children who serve as caregivers for a parent (either in-home or as frequent visitors to a care facility) share their experiences, emotions, and spiritual perspectives. There are touching scenes of these caregivers interacting with and providing care for their parents. Anyone who has been a caregiver, or who is one now, or who expects to be one - which means just about everyone - will benefit from the information provided here and the comfort of being reminded that he or she is not alone. Highly recommended for all congregational libraries. Monica Tenney Congretional Libraries Today Subtitled A Guide to Positive Growth When Caring for Aging Parents, this absolutely first-rate production offers just that. Rather than offering a generous spin on a situation that can and does give rise to guilt, anger and depression, however, the tape readily admits these downsides and offers coping tips for dealing with stress, isolation and limitations. Packaged with a nice little resource booklet of suggestions and bibliographical references, this video is highly recommended and is an Editor's Choice. K. Glaser Video Librarian
