He became involved in Open Doors ministry and later studied at the Bible College of Wales. He met Maria Metzler, a fellow student at the college, and they married September 1, 1972. They worked with various ministries, including London City Mission, particularly in an outreach to seamen at Tilbury Docks. They immigrated to Canada in 1982 and played a leading role in the establishment of Lighthouse Harbour Ministries, a ministry to seamen in the port of Vancouver, British Columbia. They have three children and five grandchildren. Maria (Meltzer) Kappers was born December 22, 1945 in the town of Schwerin, Mecklenburg, Germany. The family moved to the village of Besenfeld in 1952 and then to Freudenstadt in the Black Forest. She trained as a nurse and then a midwife and worked for a time as a nanny in France and England. She met Teus Kappers when they were both students at the Bible College of Wales, and they married September 1, 1972.
