By chance, he came to have a neighbor known as ""Old Dagger."" Many legends swirled around Old Dagger, told with great mystery in the hutong-people whispered about him, but always hesitated to say more. Old Dagger was always silent, yet he regarded Hou Senlin differently, insisting on taking him as an apprentice, hoping to pass down his ancestral craft of wood carving. This is a story of Beijing's hutongs along the Central Axis-a tale of growing up steeped in the warmth and vitality of everyday life. Following the publication of Beijing Kid, this new work by children's literature author Zhou Min captures the growth of a child in Beijing for upper elementary and middle school readers.
