Overview

"'He is the one who bit my hand, ' she told her male colleagues, gesturing towards Leon. The other cops said nothing. They just stared at Leon with blank expressions on their faces. Now what is going to happen? Leon asked himself. He wondered whether the girl cop was still on duty or had just come to point him out to her colleagues. Perhaps I am going to be taken away, Leon thought. Maybe the cops want revenge for what I did to one of their own. It often happened in the movies. Or maybe they are going to question me about the high grade. After escaping from the political violence and economic chaos in his home country, Zimbabwean artist and amateur researcher finds himself in a serene village in Botswana where he lives as an undocumented immigrant, building stone structures and doing other menial work for a living, keeping a low profile and playing cat and mouse games with the police. He is finally arrested a few days before the FIFA 2010 World Cup kicks off in South Africa, during a police raid dubbed the ""Clean Up Campaign"". Leon takes us on a journey from the rocky lanes of the village, through the police cells, detention centres and prisons of Botswana up to the final leg when he and his fellow deportees are taken to Botswana's border with Zimbabwe. There are flashbacks from Leon's past, memories of which are triggered by what he encounters during the few days in the hands of the ""system"", the highlights being his platonic relationship with his adoptive sister Lorato and other members of her extended family."
