When GRIT is Not Enough: Reworking Mindset and Purpose for Easier Effort in Hard Times

Overview

Grit, that combination of passion and perseverance, can take you from zero to hero in pursuit of those big, challenging goals worth pursuing. Gritty people, be they athletes, coaches, or corporate C-suiters, thrive best when the road ahead is clear and plans make sense. In times of uncertainty and change, however, grit may not be enough; in some circumstances, it can even be counterproductive. This book is for those times. In this book, you will learn: -To recognize when you are overindexing on grit; -How to build a more agile mindset that sustains through change; -Why purpose trumps passion in times of uncertainty; -How being of service to others serves us in tough times; -When to quit, and when to ""stick"" with an effort; -How to clean up and smooth out your effort In short, you will learn how to work with uncertainty and perform more effectively in ways that benefit you as well as those you lead and work with.

Richard Young, PhD Former head of innovation for Great Britain and New Zealand Sport and 10 Olympics uncovering the keys to repeat medal enabling systems This book reminded me of Brene Brown's observation, You either walk inside your story and own it, or you stand outside your story and hustle for your worthiness. Peterson's book will be helpful for many sports people to discover how to walk inside. Professor Mark B. Andersen Halmstad University, Sweden Elite sport so often touts unrelenting grit as the key to success but rarely sheds light on the steps to take when grit becomes ineffective. Dr. Trevor Brown (PhD, Cognitive Neuroscience) Australian Olympian, Athens 2004 As a sport scientist who has interacted with many coaches and athletes who are well-prepared to persevere but are not always ready to refine their approach when times are tough, I found worthwhile advice in every chapter. Dr. David T. Martin Honorary Professor, Australian Catholic University; Chief Scientist and Director of Performance, Performance Health Sciences, LLC In my 20 years as Team USA Women's Wrestling's National Team Coach, I have had few books that have helped me analyse and work through the struggles to be successful in sport or life. I wish I had this knowledge decades ago. This is a book that I will recommend not only to the athletes on our national team but also to all the coaches in our development pipeline. Terry Steiner USA Wrestling Women's National Team Coach I wish I'd had this book as a reference when I started my sport psychology career, or even earlier, when I was an athlete.
