Series Review: Simple Machines at Work These titles explain how simple machines provide mechanical advantage and/or changing directions of force for lifting or shifting loads. Each one combines bright color photos of different forms of the machine being (safely) used with simply worded explanations, and closes with a low-tech demonstration that does not involve any measurements or calculations. Though Gosman includes some historical notes, it's the demonstrated ubiquity of levers, wedges, and the rest in implements from wheelbarrows and chopsticks to cheese graters and baseball bats that will make the strongest impression. --School Library Journal The titles in this series support basic science concepts taught in all primary schools.... The text is easy to read due to the font size and type. Sufficient information is given to explain the concept, pique a child's interest, and perhaps lead to more questions... Captioned color photographs add the visual component necessary for young readers. The series would make an ideal supplement to science classes. --Library Media Connection
