Overview

In a town crammed between an abandoned mine and an interstate exit ramp, a local lawyer is sucked into a string of disappearances when a body of a young girl is discovered, then disappears a second time. Urged along by a grieving, alcoholic father, Clark Rawlins stumbles through an investigation involving a quietly incompetent police department, fragmented local myths, and town gossip. Giving up a successful career to take care of his aging mother, Clark hopes desperately that his investigation will give some purpose to the small town he escaped from, but as the mystery deepens, Clark is forced to realize that while knowledge is power, it is not one man can control.
