Overview

Follow a young man from South Texas on his journey through the horrors of combat in America's most controversial war. I know many veterans do not wish to recall the horrors of war, but I believe that remaining silent is a disservice to the young people of this country, especially those who will one day serve in combat. As a high school substitute teacher I was dealing with young people who upon learning I was a Vietnam combat veteran, asked me to write a short book about my first tour of Vietnam. I realized the book would have to be geared toward very young people so I omitted all bad language and much of the graphic descriptions of war. This book should be read by people over the age of 14.

Author Information

Roy L. Parker was born in August 30,1949 in Corpus Christi, Texas and was the oldest of six children living in poverty. He grew up under very harsh conditions and did not have many of the things other children possessed. In 1967, he dropped out of high school and enlisted in the Army because it had been his dream to be a soldier. In August, 1968, he was severely wounded in Vietnam and returned to the States. In 1970, he once again returned to Vietnam where he served all over South Vietnam. He was a member of the Army for a total of 13 years and was married to his first wife for 23 years. Roy suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and as a result was qualified for VA Rehabilitation where he earned a BA in History in 1995. He experienced some very difficult physical problems and later worked as a substitute teacher for a small South Texas high school. In 1992, he married his present wife, Molly, and they have a grown son. Roy is now retired and spends his time writing books and poetry. Roy has always had a deep admiration for children and young adults. He currently has more books about his experiences in Vietnam in final editing process.
