What You Didn't Hear

Overview

""What You Didn't Hear"" is a deeply empathetic and lyrical picture book that invites readers into the sensory-rich, often overwhelming world of a neurodivergent child. While others see a boy who is quiet, different, or distant, they don't hear what he hears-the crinkle of a wrapper, the roar of a lunchroom, or the soft hum that holds him together when everything feels too loud. Told in poetic, gentle prose by Jupiter Sacadura and brought to life with Melissa Carver's warm, expressive illustrations, this story offers a powerful look at how it feels to be misunderstood-and how small acts of kindness, quiet understanding, and shared connection can make all the difference. This book is perfect for classrooms, families, and readers of all ages; ""What You Didn't Hear"" opens the door to conversations about neurodiversity, inclusion, and empathy. It's a celebration of seeing and hearing one another more fully-and of honoring the many ways people communicate, feel, and belong.

Author Information

Jupiter Sacadura is a United States Navy veteran and special education teacher's assistant whose work is dedicated to advocating for neurodivergent children and families. From 1999 to 2012, he served globally as a cryptologic technician technical (CTT), qualified in both submarine and surface warfare, and traveled to over 30 countries during his enlistment. Following his military service, Jupiter redirected his commitment to service by supporting students with diverse learning needs. Drawing from both his professional role in education and his personal experience as a father of six-including children who are neurodivergent-his work is rooted in empathy, equity, and a deep respect for individual differences. ""What You Didn't Hear"" is the first installment in a four-part literary saga that seeks to center the voices of neurodivergent children, challenge societal expectations, and inspire more inclusive approaches to parenting, education, and support. Through his writing, Jupiter Sacadura aims to foster greater understanding, acceptance, and meaningful change.
