What Would Maggie Do?: A Triumph of Love on a Journey through Dementia

Overview

Michael’s charismatic and highly successful wife Maggie showed the first signs of dementia in her mid-fifties. His experience of caring for her is quite exceptional: he lived with her in a care home for nine years, overseeing every aspect of her care and medical treatment. Michael chose to do this as an act of love, not wanting to be separated from his wife nor to leave her alone. But the result was that a highly experienced business consultant lived inside the care system for nine years, observing, guiding and negotiating care and medical treatment on Maggie’s behalf, and is now able to share that story. In the experience of care professionals, this is unique. The lessons he learnt are so important that he has been urged by senior figures in the care sector to share his experience for the benefit of others and to promote much needed changes in the current care system.

Reviews

“This book is a must read for everybody working in residential care because It offers a unique perspective by somebody who lived in a care home to support his wife. The insights and experiences contained in this book are game-changing for the care sector.”  Professor Martin Green OBE, CEO, Care England “This book is unique in that the author brought huge business experience to the job of supporting his wife and her carers cope with dementia. Because he was living in the care home with her, he was able to see daily how a misplaced attitude to risk can badly affect the dementia sufferer. It is a vital read for anyone involved in care or with a loved one facing dementia.” Damian Green, Chair, Social Care Foundation and former First Secretary of State

Author Information

Michael Maslinski spent fifteen years devotedly caring for his wife Maggie after she was diagnosed with dementia, including nine years living together in a care home. It is this unique experience which has motivated him to write this book, so that others may benefit from the insights and lessons of his experience. He was formerly a senior banker with Coutts until 1995, when he founded his own strategic consultancy, advising private banks, wealth managers and family offices around the world. In 2011 he also became a partner in Europe’s market leading family office business, Stonehage Fleming. He had a significant influence on the development of the wealth management sector globally over a twenty year period, which is recognised by two ‘lifetime achievement’ awards. He has been involved in several major charities as a trustee, and one smaller charity as the joint founder. This is Michael’s first book, but he has previously written extensively on the wealth management sector in professional publications and in national and international newspapers such as the Financial Times, The Telegraph, Time Magazine and The Economist.
