What Works for Whom?: A Critical Review of Treatments for Children and Adolescents

Overview

This comprehensive book evaluates the evidence for the full range of widely used child and adolescent mental health treatments, providing vital knowledge to inform clinical decision making. Organized around the major presenting problems in child and adolescent practice, the book synthesizes findings from hundreds of carefully selected studies on both psychosocial and pharmacological approaches. Each chapter introduces the clinical problem at hand, systematically reviews the available outcome research, spells out recommendations for evidence-based practice; and considers implications for service development. Written by experienced researchers and practitioners, the volume emphasizes the importance of tailoring all interventions to the needs of the individual child.

Reviews

This valuable book will greatly help mental health professionals who wish to base their interventions on published evidence. They should all read it with care. --Philip Graham, FRCPsych, Emeritus Professor of Child Psychiatry, Institute of Child Health, London

Peter Fonagy and his colleagues present an encyclopedic review of the research evidence on the effectiveness of treatments for psychological problems in children. Since it is every clinician's goal to utilize treatments that work, all practitioners treating children should be familiar with the research presented in this extraordinarily comprehensive volume. --David H. Barlow, PhD, Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders, Department of Psychology, Boston University

Fonagy and his associates have assembled a thorough, clinically oriented review of the major psychosocial and pharmacological treatments for mental disorders in children. Of interest not only for its content but also for its approach to the problem of how such a review might be best accomplished, this volume is full of interesting and important observations that should delight both clinicians and researchers. --John S. March, MD, MPH, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Duke University Medical Center
This scholarly book is the timeliest addition to our understanding of evidence-based therapies for childhood mental disorders....the first two chapters were so powerfully written that they will always be the guideposts for further discussion on the EBT in children. Those chapters are the heart and soul of this book....it is a good tool for clinician teachers who want to teach good evidence based medicine. -- Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Review
.,. an outstanding, nearly encyclopedic, review of the research evidence regarding mental health treatments for children and adolescents....A key strength of this book is that many forms of treatment are included for each disorder....The work is extraordinarily comprehensive....This is an excellent volume that will be useful to clinicians, administrators, policy planners, and researchers. It clarifies what research has been done and what research is needed to define treatments that work for children and adolescents. -- Clinical Social Work Journal
.,. a unique and needed contribution to the literature on the psychiatric treatment of children and adolescents. -- Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic
This comprehensive and informative book makes a highly valuable contribution to the knowledge of treatment in children and adolescents with mental disorders....It is a pleasure to read this book. It can also serve as a quick reference book. The book is highly recommended for researchers, clinicians and health planners within child and adolescent mental health services. -- European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
.,. anyone involved with child and adolescent mental health, clinicians, researchers, and administratorsas well as those involved with professional training would find this book extremely helpful....It is rare to find reviews of this topic that reflect a clinician's sensitivity combined with a researcher's ability to not only synthesize findings but to analyse the inherent system problems that have restricted links between research, practice and administrative bodies. -- Psychotherapy in Australia
.,. a fairly awe-inspiring endeavour. It provides a well-structured, clear and comprehensive review of relevant evidence based research. -- Clinical Child Psychology and Psychiatry
This volume would be ideal for the advanced graduate student and the experienced clinician alike. It could serve as an authoritative reference tool for both researchers and clinicians. -- Child & Family Behavior Therapy
This is an excellent book that deserves to be in the library of every practitioner who works with children and adolescents suffering from emotional or behavioural disorders. It is extremely well written, comprehensive, and unusually concise. One of the things I particularly liked is that when the evidence base is not strong the authors are not afraid to provide some practical clinical suggestions. Strongly recommended. -- Journal of Child Psychology & Psychiatry
This is an extremely well written and comprehensive overview of the evidence base for the treatment of child and adolescent mental health problems. The authors are well respected in this field and have produced a clear, cogent handbook that synthesizes the studies that have evaluated psychosocial and pharmacological approaches....an excellent handbook and one that is highly recommended for use by clinicians, researchers, academics and anyone involved in delivering services to children and adolescents with mental health problems. If good quality services are to be delivered to young people and their families, reviews like these should inform the decision-making process at all levels. An essential read. -- Healthcare Counseling and Psychotherapy Journal
