OverviewWhat drove a highly educated Greek doctor, a spoilt rich boy, a tax collector and a down-to-earth fisherman from Galilee, to write four distinctive accounts of the deeds of the young man called Jesus Bar-Joseph? How strange it was that this disparate group of men should agree to tell this bizarre story about a young Jewish man who was: born of a virgin, cast out demons, healed lepers, walked on water, fed audiences of thousands with a few buns and a couple of fish, died on a Roman cross, and came back to life from the dead. Who would say such things, and dare so much? As we focus on the four gospels that tell the story of Jesus, we should not let the differences between the four accounts cloud our judgement. Far from simply being proof that the four writers couldn't get their stories straight , we will see that the very differences between the gospels bring to mind the old technique of colour printing. This technique reproduces works of art or photographs by overlaying four subtly different images of the picture one on top of the other. When the process is finished, the whole picture springs to life on the page in glorious colour, light, shade and form. Unlike books of purely human authorship, each of the gospels escapes from the mere two-dimensional depiction of Christ suggested by the printing analogy to show us four multi-dimensional pictures of the man called Jesus. Mark, writing his book to the Roman believers, presents Jesus as the servant-saviour, but at the same time as the very Son of the Living God. Long before we have finished reading this gospel According to Mark , how can we not also echo the question asked about Jesus of Nazareth by His friends and enemies alike: What manner of man is this?
