Hays Born 1946 into a lower middle class family in San Diego, California. His father was a civil engineer. His mother a homemaker. He was a quiet student, not part of the in-crowd, an avid reader and good but not top student. He was active in Boy Scouts, achieved Eagle rank. He joined the California National Guard to avoid being drafted out of college. He was called up twice for anti-riot duty. He graduated from San Diego State College with a BS in biology with high honors. Next he did a Ph.D. (1973) in biological sciences at Stanford University. While there he married a student in a botany Ph.D. program at UC Davis. They later had two sons raised in semi-rural Colorado. She worked as a lab assistant and later taught tertiary science and math. After graduating, he was assistant professor of biology at San Diego State University. He next went to work in applied ecology and environmental impact assessment for the US Fish and Wildlife Service in Ft. Collins, Colorado. He had diverse responsibilities including publishing software, running a multi-state scientific policy analysis, and ending up assisting state natural resource agencies by consulting, training and developing curriculum up to governance. He took early retirement at age 52. They emigrated to New Zealand (1999) and bought a 1920 cottage in poor repair close to the beach. Hays rebuilt the house, replacing an estimated 80%. His wife went back to teaching. She took a one-year job teaching in China, and Hays accompanied her and kept house. Their oldest son died on a school outing. Their youngest son married and has two children. Hays and his wife now split their time between New Zealand and near them in the US. He initiated the project of which this book is a part in 2015.
