Overview

It is difficult today to imagine a consensus on austerity. The reason that is usually given to explain the current powerlessness of the majority lies in a class perspective (economic or political), and it is generally not noticed that the new class structures imposed by an educated society are even more easily controlled by established interests. Undoubtedly, an imperialist and capitalist organization of society defines a social whole within which a minority has a disproportionate influence on the opinion of the majority. But in a technocratic society, the constitutional guarantees granted to freedom of speech, of the press, of meeting were aimed at securing the advent of government by the people. Modern electronics, offset presses, computers, telephones could represent equipment capable of giving an entirely new meaning to these freedoms. Unfortunately, all of these technical conquests are used to increase the power of the knowledge bankers, instead of serving to forge the real networks that would provide equal opportunities for the majority of human beings to meet. De-schooling the social and cultural structure requires the use of technology to make a politics of participation possible. It is on the basis of a coalition of the majority that we can determine limits to secrecy and growing power, without there being a dictatorship. We need a new environment in which to grow up to know a classless society, or else we will enter the brave new world , where the big brother will be there to educate us all.
