It's true - even as a small child, give me a pencil and I'd be happy for days, hand me some crayons and I'd probably just eat them. For some reason, that waxy substance interfering with my beautifully, carefully executed pencil lines just frightened me and it took me many years to shake the fear. However, by college I had made a full recovery and was able to experiment with new and exciting ways of applying color, ways that didn't involve crayons one bit. I soon discovered the wonderful world of oil painting (ah, oils!) as well as my love of creating interesting and expressive characters and have been hooked ever since. In 1998, I graduated from the State University of New York at Fredonia with a Bachelors of Art in Graphic Design and a Bachelors of Science in Communication... can you tell I was confused? I knew I loved art but was still unsure how to make a living at it and thought perhaps design was a good answer (it wasn't). And I've always loved communication so I thought perhaps getting involved with the media would keep me interested (it didn't). But fortunately by the time I graduated I remembered the happy times of my youth, drawing my days away by making little books out of folded paper and staples and decided, much to the chagrin of my design professors I'm sure, that my entire senior show would be a display of my very first attempt at a children's book written and illustrated by yours truly. It was the first exciting step on my great big journey to being a real children's book illustrator. Knowing it could take some time to build an illustration career, I went on to get my Masters in Art Education (which is where I met my husband so I guess that was a good decision in many ways!) and have been teaching high school art for several years now as well. After dozens of small illustration jobs here and there, my first true bite at success came in 2007 when my book, I Like Gum, (written by Doreen Tango Hampton) was published by Shenanigan Books. This amazing experience completely supported what I knew all along, that illustrating for children was my love, my life, and my calling. I am now settled comfortably in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of New York with my awesome husband, our amazing daughter and one big bad cat. In my spare time... who am I kidding, my daughter is a year and half, I have no spare time! But I do know this; I love what I do and I love my life and that's enough for me!
