OverviewNothing is ever easy for Shadow and the Seeker, a pair of aspiring heroes who want to be swashbuckling but aren't always up to the task. The Seeker, a wizard of modest magical talent, and her partner, the laconic swordsman known as Shadow, eke out a living in the vast, labyrinthine cityport of Baythim in the Western Lands. Seeker studies to improve her magical abilities and rise in status in her magical society; Shadow continues to hone his battle skills and tries to keep Seeker from making things worse when her magic doesn't quite work out as she intended. The struggling duo hire themselves out as mercenaries, attempt to find treasures, and do anything not too far beyond the limit of the law to earn coins, often with mixed success. When one of their occasional employers, Malifyr, offers them five times their usual fee to locate a former lieutenant who stole a valuable ring from him, the pair quickly accept the job. Malifyr, nominally an innkeeper, is in fact one of the leaders of the cadres that rule the city, and not someone to be crossed. However, Shadow and Seeker's efforts are hampered by the annual five-day long bacchanal known as Festivale. Their investigation takes them through the usual suspects, including the City Guard, drug dens, Malifyr's chief competitor, the family of the dead man, and the Black Guild, a powerful organization known for treachery, conflict, wealth, and power. The duo eventually succeeds in locating the ring, but recovering it comes at a grisly cost. However, they also realize that, as usual, not everything Malifyr told them was precisely true. Can they figure out Malifyr's machinations and out-maneuver him before Shadow and the Seeker become victims themselves?
