Overview

Do we really know what the Bible says about forgiveness? Perhaps we think we do. The Bible's teaching, though, is more complex than we might imagine. Forgiveness confronts us at once with our weaknesses and strengths. Forgiveness exercises our covenant with God and with one another. It is a risk we take in order to move deeper into life. Forgiveness is prophetic; it is a way of communicating endless love to a needy world. Forgiveness opens our hearts and expands our spiritual horizon, pestering us to live the gospel more consciously and fully. Forgiveness requires prayer, grace and perseverance. When we forgive, we can heal our memories and discover a path to freedom and peace. This book, intended for a general audience, will show that the Bible tells us all this and much more about forgiveness.

Reviews

A wonderful resource for personal reflection or group study, Forgiveness offers a mini-retreat in every chapter through scripture, reflection, current day-to-day situations, and questions to ponder. The Bible comes alive in these pages; readers will find their place in the scenarios that relate to Jesus' teachings. -- Mary Ann Nicholls, M. Div., Pastoral Associate, St. Catherine of Siena Parish, DuBois, PA. Spiritual Director, Scripture Instructor, LaRoche University, Pittsburgh, PA. Getty guides us through a wealth of biblical texts to become a forgiving community. Poignant and powerful events in people's lives introduce a variety of biblical themes as familiar texts shine with new insight along with original interpretations not usually associated with forgiveness, for example, Elijah learning forgiveness (1 Kings 17-19). In a world where wounds span decades, the treatment of memory and forgiveness is strikingly pertinent. Beautifully written, the work is a guide to prayer and contemplation and ideal for group dialogue. -- John R. Donahue, S.J., Raymond E Brown Distinguished Professor of New Testament (Emeritus) at St. Mary's Seminary and University
