Parents and educators both share responsibility to engender in children empathy and a sense of responsibility. Baxter's Corner provides a unique series of children's books that help adults teach these essential skills while telling children delightful stories. Not only are the characters engaging and their tails charming the design of each story captivates the imagination of the child. As an educator for 40 years, I appreciate the Go Beyond section which appears at the end of each story. There, parents, grandparents and educators may find activities and questions that make sharing these tales with the children we love opportunities for lessons about the impact of the choices we make. We discover fun facts about the featured animals as well as questions which develop critical thinking and which spark children's creativity. Through the creative process, children develop essential life skills such as empathy, grit, imagination and critical thinking. The creative artists behind Baxter's Corner have created vibrant wall art along with puppets and stuffed animals all of which can be used by children in storytelling. Through this activity parents, grandparents, and educators can enter in to children's imagination in their world. Suzanne Cooke, RSCJ Independent School Administrator Miami, Florida At Cabbage Patch Settlement House, 80% of our kids are deficit readers, not reading at grade level, and what they tell us is that they don't think reading is fun. Through our work with Baxter's Corner, they find out that reading can be fun as they also learn how to integrate values such as differences in people, compassion, and social negotiation, skills that turn young people into successful adults. We are proud of our partnership with Baxter's Corner and look forward to many more years of collaboration. J. Tracy Holladay, M. Div., Executive Director The Cabbage Patch Settlement House Louisville, Kentucky Dear Ms. Baker and Ms. Stottmann, Thank you for creating the Gang at Baxter's Corner! While looking for a Folkmanis puppet for my classroom I discovered the Gang at Baxter's Corner. Since I live in Baxter County, Arkansas I had to check it out. I am so glad I did. What a delight, characters and books, perfect for my classroom of Special Needs Children. I have decided to make our reading corner ""The Gang at Baxter's Corner"" reading Club this fall. I ordered Mr. McBoom from you. He recently arrived. What a wonderful addition to our classroom. My student's are going to be so excited when they see him. I will be adding other Gang members as my teacher salary permits. I love how your books include activities. They are wonderful social stories that my students can benefit from. I don't know if you take ideas for future books - since Mr. McBoom is a teacher it would be great to have a First Day of school book, maybe you could include bus manners? Love your work! I can't wait to add the next member of the gang! Sincerely, Rebecca G. Welive Baxter County, Arkansas

Ms. Baker is ""Chief Pencil"" or author of all of the Baxter's Corner stories to date. Mary Ellen Brown Stottmann, 2017 Born in New Mexico, raised in New Jersey & Louisville Kentucky Mary Ellen Stottmann's art education began earlier than most. By the age of ten she was oil painting with a style that is still apparent today. After studying art in Paris, France she lived in New York City majoring in graphic design and graduated from the internationally recognized Parson School of Design, currently The New School. Her professional career began in 1966 working for an advertising studio. 1968 was a co-founder of a ""Printing While You Wait"" company which eventually led to her owning a digital offset printing company to retirement in 2005. Her career in printing allowed her to continue designing material for her clients; some are still being used today. One of the many opportunities offset print gave her was an amazing understanding of color and how it reacts by overlapping intensity. At retirement Mary Ellen began oil painting again taking a very graphic approach. Building the objects (and people) she usually paints over an intense color background allowing this color to form highlights or lines depending on the complexity of her pieces.
