OverviewOne of Christianity's most beloved hymns, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, has offered comfort and strength to countless hearts for over a century. Its timeless message of solace, faith, and trust in God's unfailing love continues to uplift those facing life's trials. But behind this cherished hymn lies an extraordinary and often overlooked story - one of sorrow, sacrifice, and steadfast devotion. Joseph M. Scriven, an Irish-born preacher and poet, penned these words in 1846 as a heartfelt poem to his mother, who remained in Ireland while he built a new life in Canada. Little did he know that his words of encouragement would one day inspire millions. This book delves deep into Scriven's journey-from his upbringing in Ireland to the profound tragedies that shaped his faith. Through detailed research, historical insight, and a fresh perspective on Scriven's life, this book uncovers the man behind the hymn and the trials that refined his faith. More than just a history, it is a tribute to the enduring power of prayer and the comfort we can find in Jesus, no matter our burdens. For those who love hymnody, history, or simply seek encouragement, this book is an inspiring journey into the story of a man whose words still echo in the hearts of believers worldwide.
