OverviewAs West Virginia's legislature debated House Bill 3293 In the spring of 2021, few could have predicted that this piece of legislation would eventually reach the highest court in the land. The bill, which would become known as the ""Save Women's Sports Act,"" seemed straightforward enough to its supporters: ensure that only ""biological females"" could compete in girls' and women's school sports. But to its opponents, it represented something far more consequential-a dangerous precedent that could exclude transgender youth from participating in activities fundamental to their development and well-being. The law's passage set in motion a legal battle that has captured national attention, pitting questions of fairness in women's sports against the rights of transgender students to participate in activities aligned with their gender identity. At the center of this storm stands a transgender girl (12 years old at the time) who simply wanted to run cross-country and compete in track and field with her friends. Her lawsuit, filed under the initials B.P.J. to protect her privacy, has become the vehicle through which the Supreme Court will address one of the most contentious issues in American education policy. This book is based on publicly available court documents, news reports, and legal analysis as of September 2025. The Supreme Court's decision, when issued, may provide additional clarity on the legal issues discussed in this work.
