This was launched earlier in the year when 15 former Welsh captains climbed Kilimanjaro. There have been 127 captains of Wales and Bevan managed to contact 61 of them, either personally or by phone and e-mail. They were asked fairly standard questions best match played in, finest hour, toughest opponent and best captain played under. Their answers overlay a copiously illustrated book with contributions ranging from Phil Bennett to David Young, and from players such as Gethin Jenkins who captained Wales during one match, to Ieuan Evans who made 28 appearances as captain. High quality photography is provided by Huw Evans, the official WRU photographer. Both he and author Alun Wyn Bevan, an enthusiastic rugby writer, have compiled this book as a labour of love, with royalties going to the Stepping Stones Appeal, as previously mentioned. In his introduction Bevan recalls some of the captains associated with famous victories such as Gwyn Nicholls against the All Blacks in 1905, Claude Davey in 1935 and Bleddyn Williams in 1953 the last time Wales beat the All Blacks. In the 1970s, Grand Slams under John Dawes (1971), Mervyn Davies (1976) and Phil Bennett (1978) are mentioned. Also, Wales's third position in the 1987 World Cup under Richard Moriarty, and the more recent Grand Slam years of 2005 and 2008 under Gareth Thomas and Ryan Jones are recorded. In summary, this is an interesting overview of the captains of the last 50 years who are still with us.
