Table of ContentsReviewsThis charming 62-page book, part of Y Lolfa's excellent 'It's Wales' series, tells the stories of the preserved steam railways in Wales, taking us through the Welshpool and Llanfair light railway, the Fairbourne light railway, the Talyllyn railway, the Vale of Rheidol light railway, the Bala Lake railway, the Llangollen railway, the Heart of Wales line, the Welsh Highland railway, Llanberis, the Gwili railway, and ends with a description of the Great North Wales Loop and a well deserved celebration of the triumph of the Ffestiniog railway. Jim Green tells the stories of how the lines came to be built and how they were restored. He does not shy away from the fact that most of these lines were initially built to fuel the industrial revolution, by businessmen not volunteer engineers, and were certainly not built to improve our countryside. But he expresses beautifully what they can mean to us now, as a way to see the wonderful variety of that countryside, to travel simply for its own pleasure, and to experience a 'slower pace of life' that is so rare these days. Above all, this is a book about enthusiasm. It justly praises the bands of enthusiasts, most often volunteers, who have kept these railways alive. It shines with the author's heartfelt enthusiasm for his subject. And it cannot fail to inspire the reader with enthusiasm to travel on these wonderful railways, such a beautiful part of Wales's heritage. A book to get enthusiastic about - a joy. -- Janet Thomas @ www.gwales.com Author InformationJim Green is a full time author and is the author of 'Holy Ways of Wales' published in 2000.
