Gerhard Ecker ist Professor für Theoretische Physik an der Universität Wien. Sein Forschungsschwerpunkt ist die Theoretische Elementarteilchenphysik. Mehrere Forschungsaufenthalte führten ihn unter anderem an das Europäische Kernforschungszentrum CERN in Genf. Seit dem Übertritt in den Ruhestand beschäftigt er sich auch mit der Geschichte der Kern- und Teilchenphysik.
