Reviews

It may be hard to conceive a bright spot in 2020, but for me it was following the Facebook updates of an emaciated, scared little hound found alone in the woods of central Virginia. Writer Katherine Cobb took this engaging true story and turned it into Weeza's Great Escape, a delightful children's book about Weeza's journey to find a new home. With Cobb's words and Nadia Ilchuck's gorgeous illustrations, we get the story from Weeza's perspective. I felt all her fear, hunger and hope as she learns to trust after only knowing a life of abuse by her fellow pack dogs and their hunter/owner. Weeza's Great Escape will resonate not only with children and animal lovers, but with anyone who has ever felt lost or needed a helping hand. It's a reminder to everyone how a simple act of kindness can change-or save-a life. Catherine Baldau Author of Thoughts & Prayers Weeza is, literally, the underdog you love to cheer for! This captivating story is eloquently written. The vivid, descriptive language paints a picture that is complemented by the lush illustrations of this picture book. As a reading teacher, I strongly recommend this book for all ages. My middle schoolers were captivated! The rich vocabulary makes this perfect to use to point out the power of the written word to students. We felt ALL of the emotions and made many connections to real life situations, both canine and human! We are all anxiously waiting to see how Weeza's story unfolds. The world needs more Weeza! Michelle LaFollette, MS ED Reading/Language Arts, Special Education Harpers Ferry Middle School This is a wonderful story about a dog that starts out in a rough place and ends up in a beautiful place. We have to recognize that every little being has a chance and also how you can make a difference in a dog's life--a big difference. It's a heartwarming story about one of the dogs that makes it, and I also like that it happens to be true. Rachael Swann Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Simplicity Animal Hospital It is such a touching story. As I retired reading teacher, I consider myself a connoisseur of children's books. It is a book I'd love to read to a classroom of children. It is so well written, easy for children to relate to, and the illustrations are beautiful. Carol Vogler Retired teacher
