In order for children to experience the diversity of gender identities during the most important phase of their lives and to be supported in developing their own gender identity, it seems that both genders are needed as caregivers. Since childcare has historically been known as a female profession, it is understandable that there are not many male caregivers. The call for more male carers seems to be omnipresent at the moment and is seen as a simple recipe for improving the quality of non-family childcare. This paper aims to evaluate why the call for more male carers is so loud at the moment and what the background to the lack of male carers is. It also aims to explain whether the employment of more male carers in non-family childcare contributes to equal opportunities for children and thus to the implementation of gender mainstreaming, or whether it reproduces gender stereotypes.
