Overview

We need to talk... about race - in fact, following the murder of George Floyd and the global outcry since, it has almost become impossible not to. But when Ben Lindsay began talking to his nine-year-old son about the content of his book, he paused: what was appropriate to share? What would help and not hinder? This book is born from that place: a book that will give young adults the tools to better understand themselves, others and how they can understand the Church's past and pave the way towards a better future. Featuring interviews with young black Christians including Guvna B, Femi Koleoso of Ezra Collective and Premier League footballer Eberechi Eze, this book will introduce young people to the history of the Church, help them explore the complexities of racial and ethnic identity today and empower them to build toward a brighter future. The book is suitable for individual reading and small group or youth group study and would be a relevant resource for schools during Black History Month.

Reviews

""Ben Lindsay's work is truly needed, We Need to Talk About Race really aligns and is an incredible resource."" -- Eddie Kadi, comedian and Strictly Come Dancing contestant * Review * ""This is a powerful book that will help educate and inform young people on their life journeys navigating race from a Godly perspective."" -- Ebere Eze, Premier League and England footballer * Review * ""Ben provides a compelling examination of the complexities surrounding race and ethnicity within the context of the Christian church. By intertwining personal narratives with theological insights, Ben effectively dismantles the notion of race as a biological reality, arguing instead that it is a social construct that has historically been used to create hierarchies and foster discrimination. This book challenges readers, especially those within predominantly white churches, to engage in difficult conversations about race and to confront their own biases and privileges. Ben's call for inclusivity is grounded in biblical principles, reminding us that the church is a diverse body meant to reflect God's love for all humanity. With thought-provoking reflections and practical guidance, this book is a crucial resource for anyone seeking to understand the black experience in white-majority churches and to foster a more inclusive faith community."" -- Dan Blythe, Global Youth Director, Alpha * Review * ""If you've ever felt unsure how to talk with young people about race, racism, white privilege, and other challenging terminology, then this is the book for you. Ben writes with the fire of a prophet, the insight of an academic, the wisdom of a pastor, and the voice of an emerging generation hungry for things to change. This is a clarion call to unite in our collective journey towards justice, equality, and a deeper love for one another. For anyone committed to building communities that reflect the fullness of the Kingdom of God We Need To Talk About Race is an indispensable guide. With powerful testimonies, soulful reflections, and radical practices, it offers a clear path for young people towards becoming truly anti-racist."" -- Rachel Gardner, author and Director of Partnerships, Youthscape * Review * ""A beautifully generous book that offers support, insight, and guidance in equal measure. Ben has crafted a much-needed toolkit to both understand and tackle racism, perfect for congregations, classrooms, and wider communities."" -- Jeffrey Boakye, author, journalist, and broadcaster * Review * ""This book provides great insight and wisdom for any young person to engage in the key question of how the Christian faith interacts with racial justice. It is highly practical, deeply reflective, and will provoke transformational thinking for individuals and groups seeking the vital and urgent changes our culture needs in this area. It is an invaluable resource for leaders in schools, colleges, churches, and youth work contexts, which will develop wise leadership, create hopeful vision, and inspire prayerful change."" -- Andy Wolfe, Executive Director of Education, National Society for Education (Church of England) * Review * ""Christianity and racial justice should go hand in hand. Ben has written a crucial book for those looking to understand more about how to live this out in their own lives and also care for others. It's both eye-opening and an urgent conversation for the church."" -- Naomi Evans, author and Co-Founder, Everyday Racism * Review *
