Overview

This book by theologian-ethicist Lewis Mudge offers fresh philosophical and theological concepts, economic and political insights, and practical financial proposals to counter the causes and lasting effects of the worldwide recession that began in late 2007. The historical and global dimensions of Mudge's perspective and his open-ended suggestions keep the book's arguments highly relevant today, little affected by daily changes in a world economy still suffering from the reverberations of the credit collapse several years ago. Editorial references in footnotes provide up-to-date data and add nuances to the major issues raised by Mudge. To help foster the ecumenical dialogue Mudge calls for, We Can Make the World Economy a Sustainable Global Home includes responses from Elliott N. Dorff, John C. Knapp, and Djamel Eddine Laouisset - a Jew, a Christian, and a Muslim.

Michael Kinnamon-- Seattle University Lew Mudge deserves to be regarded as one of the most important Christian-based scholars of his generation. This posthumous publication is an excellent example of his hopeful realism' -- fully aware of present social, economic realities while still daring to envision new possibilities for structuring economic life. My hope is that Lew's analysis of the current financial crisis, We Can Make the World Economy a Sustainable Global Home, will be widely read and will spur readers to pick up his other thought-provoking works. Clifton Kirkpatrick-- Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary With the capable editorial assistance of Lew's wife, Jean McClure Mudge, the volume on which Lew was working at the time of his death has come to life. He gives voice to the contribution of Abrahamic faiths to a just and life-sustaining economy. This work of theological and ethical imagination is a more excellent way' to shape our global economy. . . . Lew's words are as fresh and relevant now as ever. Martin Robra-- World Council of Churches What a privilege it was to listen to Lewis Mudge! In these pages his enlightened insights into the world economy continue to inspire us. . . . This book shows him at work as a great theologian, teacher, and lucid guide for those looking for orientation in the midst of our global crises.
