OverviewFather Dolan argues in his book We Are a House Divided that Catholics are experiencing a crisis of conscience and identity aided and abetted by Catholic leaders, politicians and voters who fail to apply the Church's teachings to the nation's civic discourse. The author provides an in-depth review and defense of the Church's stance on abortion, stem cell research and other critical issues of our time. He then offers recommendations for Church officials, politicians and the laity on actions that can be taken to restore the Catholic faith in daily life. Indeed, there has been a long standing disconnect between the positions and behavior of the Democratic Party, it's office holders and candidates with regards non-negotiable Catholic moral teachings. In the book's final chapter, Repairing the Damage, Father Dolan proposes among other things that the present time is optimum for faithful, committed Catholic voters, as well as other voters of like mind, to withhold their support of that Party and its candidates unless and until acceptable changes are made. The book's overriding principle is that Catholic is not a label to be worn but a life to be lived.
