Backer profiles 13 western states, including Alaska and Hawaii, in this Search & Find Geography Book. Each gets its own spread, which includes the motto, flag and capital, plus bulleted facts and trivia. An inset U.S. map highlights its location within the 13. A poem challenges readers to search the state map on the facing page ( Find Anchorage, Fairbanks, / Juneau, and Nome. / Find a town called North Pole / and an Eskimo home, ), and ends with the line: Where's Charlie. (Here, the diminutive canine mascot is tucked inside an igloo, flanked by a giant polar bear and a grinning snowman.) The maps were modeled after the author's collection of vintage dishtowels-and it shows in their snappy, retro design. Unfortunately, the volume doesn't place the states in context, offering no justification for its narrow focus. There's no sense of history, or of much geography, even; the U.S. map included on the endpapers labels only the 13 states, presenting the rest of the country as a big blue blob.
