OverviewThe devotion of the Way of the Cross should be very dear to the heart of every fervent Catholic. The saints have recommended that we meditate on our Savior's sufferings every day, or at least every Friday, and one of the easiest ways of doing this is to pray the Stations or the Way of the Cross. It has always been the opinion of the saints that a Christian who meditates with love on the sufferings of Christ gains more spiritual benefit than another who practices rigorous penances or says long prayers. The Way of the Cross is one of the most beautiful devotions we can perform, and at the same time one of the richest in blessings, not only because of the great number of indulgences which the Popes have attached to it during the centuries, but more especially because of its sublime object, the Passion and death of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Meditation on the Passion is a powerful means to avoid sin, to subdue indifference and to attain perfection. St. Leonard of Port Maurice, one of the most fervent propagators of the devotion of the Way of the Cross, was accustomed to say: The exercise of the Way of the Cross alone is sufficient to sanctify a parish and also to attract to it temporal blessings. This devotion is capable of producing four special fruits of grace in the soul: - 1. The love of Jesus Christ. 2. Contrition for sin. 3. Conformity to the holy will of God. 4. Perseverance in virtue.
