OverviewWatershed science is emerging as an area that is bringing scientists, educators, professionals, agencies, and citizens together to address a wide range of water-related and environmental issues. With increasing population and its impacts on natural resources, there is a renewed interest to integrate human and natural systems at a landscape scale. The new ethic to sustain economic prosperity without impairing environmental quality necessitates the need for bringing concepts from a variety of disciplines. A watershed-based approach to conservation is a framework to understand complex interactions between biotic (flora, fauna), abiotic (land, water, and atmosphere), and other socio-economic components. There is a need for inclusion of emerging areas of urban systems, ecological economics, integrated modeling, community science, and coastal systems into this area. This book hopes to contribute to this task of integrating multiple concepts in watershed science using a trans-disciplinary perspective.
