OverviewWater Resource Development in Northern Afghanistan and its Implications for Amy Darya Basin is part of the World Bank Working Paper series. These papers are published to communicate the results of the Bank's ongoing research and to stimulate public discussion. Development of water resources are critically important for economic development of Afghanistan. This report provides an understanding of Afghanistan's water resources in the northern areas of the country, falling under the Amu Darya basin. The focus of the report is the Amu Darya basin because great gains can be attained by moderate investments in rehabilitation of existing schemes, thus providing and improving livelihood of millions of inhabitants in the northern areas of Afghanistan.
