OverviewThe series UFO: Explorations of Urbanism aims to fill a gap in the contemporary debate concerning urbanism by offering case studies that document and critically analyze a global spectrum of changing urban conditions in interaction with the continuous adaptation of urbanism and offer alternatives to contemporary mainstream urban projects. Water and Asphalt, the latest volume in the series, investigates the metropolitan area of Venice with regard to the increasing separation of residential and industrial neighborhoods. The densely populated region, criss-crossed by networks of roads and waterways, provides the ideal the test case for imagining the concept termed by this study as the “Project of Isotropy.” The researchers argue that conditions now exist for re-devising the isotropic space in Venice with a focus on the water system, roads and public transport, alternative mobility, forms of diffused welfare, innovative agriculture, and the decentralized production of energy.
