Waskesiu--a Cree word for 'red deer'--was an anti-submarine warship named after the townsite in Prince Albert National Park. She was Canada's first frigate, the first of her class to sink a German submarine, and one of the first Canadian warships to visit the Soviet Union during World War II.Several veterans share some of their most memorable experiences aboard HMCS Waskesiu: witnessing a sister ship sink, near misses by live torpedoes, frigid seas above the Arctic Circle, the battle with the U-boat, and a friendship that developed with a German survivor of the sunken submarine that lasted into the 21st century.
