Born in Chicago, she worked in the United States Army Air Force as an intelligence officer, where she rose to the rank of Major. She began to write science-fiction under the Tiptree pseudonym in 1967. Her short stories and novellas have received numerous prizes, including multiple Hugo, Nebula and Locus awards.
