Walter Newman (11 February 1916 - 14 October 1993) was an American radio writer and screenwriter active from the late 1940s to the early 1990s. He was nominated three times for Academy Awards (Ace in the Hole, Cat Ballou, and Bloodbrothers), but he may be best known for a work that never made it to the screen: his unproduced original script Harrow Alley.Newman's radio writing included scripts for Escape, Suspense, and The Halls of Ivy as well as the first broadcast episode of Gunsmoke. He is not officially credited for his screenplays for The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape, having renounced credit after sharp disagreements with the director, John Sturges in both cases, over changes made during shooting.
