Crochet and amigurumi expert Hicks informs readers about the materials they’ll need and recommends stitches throughout the patterns. The book dives headfirst into 17 patterns that enable readers to create the various characters. The instructions for the recommended stitches are considerably short, so there is an assumed skill level already in place, but the step-by-step photos are quite helpful. Each project listing includes helpful tips for crocheters to consider before they begin, such as the right length to cut their yarn and specific directions for each piece of the character. The most important thing to be aware of, however, is that British terminology is used throughout the book and in relation to some of the projects. The end of the book contains a glossary of UK and U.S. crochet terms, but the book still may confuse some readers since it requires them to continuously refer to this section mid-project. VERDICT This book includes delightful patterns, but it’s niche in topic and its UK terminology may hinder some readers’ ability to finish their projects.""" A real treat for Wallace and Gromit fans, Sarah-Jane Hicks' latest book takes inspiration from the short films and includes patterns to make eight of the lead characters, including Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Preston the Cyberdog, plus accessories such as Gromit's raincoat and sou'wester from The Wrong Trousers. * Inside Crochet, Issue 160 * As a child who grew up loving Wallace and Gromit, and now with my own children who really enjoy it, I couldn't wait to crochet some of my own characters. The Wallace and Gromit Cracking Crochet book by Sarah-Jane Hicks is a great book taking you step by step through making 12 different classic characters. It includes a guide for materials and tools, instructions for the stitches and techniques that are used, then leads on to the instructions for each character. The whole book is written in a clear and detailed way, with lots of beautiful photos of both the projects, plus iconic scenes from the animation which make the book really visually pleasing to use. It really is a 'Cracking' book and I can't wait to get stuck in! -- Steph Arnold * Oh Sew Bootiful * Could there be a more adorable crochet book? The answer is a simple NO! I loved this project book, it is so so fun and I defy any fan of Wallace & Gromit not to fall in love with all the creations Sarah-Jane Hicks has included. There are 12 fabulous characters to make and 17 projects in total, the hard part will be deciding which one to create first. I made Gromit (on all fours). There is a pattern for him standing and to be honest I think I will be making the whole set. They truly are a delight. The instructions for each are easy to follow. You will need an understanding of basic crochet, some small pieces are fiddly, but that said even a beginner will have so much joy making them, any hardship will soon be overlooked. The parts of each character are crocheted separately, stuffed and stitched onto the main body. There are costume changes to crochet and littered throughout the book are pages of film takes.
